Good to know
- Ontario: to legally change an adult's name (16 or older, living in Ontario for at least a year), use the mandatory Application to Change an Adult's Name from ServiceOntario at ontario.ca. A married person can instead just use a spouse's surname with the marriage certificate, or file ServiceOntario's election form to change the surname on record.
- Update federal ID first: Service Canada (SIN record), CRA, and your passport with IRCC. Then ServiceOntario (driver's licence, health card, photo card), then banks and others.
- Use your new name everywhere only after your ID matches. Airline tickets must match your passport name.
