Good to know
- Payments to a family caregiver are taxable income for the caregiver. Depending on the facts, CRA may treat the caregiver as an employee, so the person paying may need a payroll account and to deduct CPP and tax. Ask CRA or an accountant.
- Tell the other family members about the agreement and keep a log of hours and receipts. That is the best protection against a claim by the estate later.
- The person receiving care must understand the agreement when they sign. Have two adult witnesses who are not the caregiver or the caregiver's spouse, and consider a note from the family doctor.
