Good to know
- A real volunteer gives time freely, for a charitable, religious or community purpose, without expecting pay. If a for-profit business gets free work, the ESA usually says the person is an employee owed minimum wage, unless a narrow exemption applies (for example, some school or college co-op programs).
- Ontario high school students need 40 volunteer hours to graduate. Students must not displace paid staff.
- Check that your insurance covers volunteers. WSIB does not cover volunteers automatically, but some organizations can apply to cover them.
