Good to know
- Ontario's Employment Standards Act, 2000 has no single minimum working age. Minimum ages come from safety rules under the Occupational Health and Safety Act: generally 14 for most stores and offices, 15 for factories, 16 for construction, logging and surface mines, and 18 for underground mines and window cleaning. Check the rule for the exact job.
- Under Ontario's Education Act a child must attend school until 18 or graduation, so a student cannot work during school hours. Students under 18 earn the student minimum wage if they work 28 hours a week or less during the school year.
- Other provinces differ. For example, Alberta and BC require a government permit for some younger children (in Alberta, generally under 13) and limit the jobs 13 to 15 year olds can do. Check your province's employment standards website.
