Good to know
- A booth renter is self-employed: they set their own prices and hours, use their own tools and products, keep their own clients and pay their own taxes. If the salon controls all of that, the CRA may see them as an employee instead.
- In Ontario hairstyling is a compulsory trade: a hairstylist renting a chair needs a Certificate of Qualification or must be a registered apprentice with Skilled Trades Ontario. Barbering, esthetics and nails are not compulsory trades.
- Personal service settings (salons, spas, nail and lash studios) are inspected by the local public health unit under O. Reg. 136/18. Both sides follow its cleaning and sterilizing rules.
- The renter should carry their own liability insurance and give the salon a copy.
